IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 2, 2002 KBC Staff Receive eight Journalism Excellence Awards Anchorage - Koahnic Broadcast Corporation staff took eight top awards for radio journalism at the 18th Annual Convention of the Native American Journalists Association held Friday, June 21, in San Diego, CA. Included among KBC's honors were two of three awards given in the General Excellence in Radio News category with Native America Calling receiving First Place and National Native News receiving Honorable Mention. National Native News staff was also recognized with awards in the following categories: Best News Story Second Place: Bernadette Chato, National Native News: "The Katie John Case" Honorable Mention: Bernadette Chato, National Native News: "Housing Study" Best Sports Story Honorable Mention: Sage Yardley, National Native News: "Final Four Lumbee Coach" Individual, Non-Native Radio News Story First Place: Sharon Dempsey, National Native News: "NIEA Summit Meeting" Second Place: Neva Reece, National Native News: "9/11" Honorable Mention: Sharon Dempsey, National Native News: "Trust Fund Lawsuit" In addition to recognizing the NNN staff, the Native American Journalists Association lauded the work of NNN stringers Brian Bull (South Dakota), David Sommerstein (New York) and Daniel Kraker (Arizona) who together took home 11 awards spanning every radio category. "It is gratifying to be recognized by peers in the Native journalism community for outstanding work, said KBC President and CEO Jaclyn Sallee. "We take pride in the having the highest caliber of journalists in the country bringing Native news and information to our listeners every day." At the convention, NAJA hosted a new training program called Native Voice: Converging News in Native America. It was a first attempt at teaching news reporting by combining print, radio, television and web media to create multimedia productions. National Public Radio sponsored the radio portion of the training. KBC's National News Program Director and NNN Host and Producer Bernadette Chato was the lead radio trainer with other journalists coming from the NPR's "Next Generation Radio Initiative," WGBH in Boston and South Dakota Public Radio. The radio students produced three daily five-minute newscasts that can be heard via real audio on National Public Radio's website http://www.npr.org/about/nextgen/naja02/index.html.
